We usually think of Benjamin Franklin as an old man because he was 70 years old during the American Revolution, but he was also hugely influential as a young man in Philadelphia. Franklin was a leading author, printer, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions. He founded many civic organizations in Philadelphia, including the Library Company, fire department, and the University of Pennsylvania.
How did this man who had no particular reason to develop into the most successful and influential man in American history, rise from his humble beginnings to such great heights? Franklin’s Autobiography shed insight into his thinking as a young man, and explains how he developed his unique system for success. It demonstrates that he knew how to use his talents to persuade his young city and young nation to become a nesting ground for freedom of thought, discipline of character, and progress for society.
